The impact of the coronavirus pandemic has been felt across every sector, the oil and gas industry notwithstanding. With more industries having to rely on efficient digital solutions, Cyntech is at the forefront of solution providers, offering clients a more efficient way forward through the implementation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

The rapid digitalisation of multiple industries through the Internet of Things is not something new. With the rise of Industry 4.0, the implementation of smart solutions that optimise production, enhance efficiency and ultimately, reduce costs have become the new standard.  The adoption of IIoT solutions within the oil and gas industry has, however, been somewhat delayed, especially when compared to the public, communications and healthcare sectors, who have all already entered the proof-of-concept stage.

The reason for this delay is not due to a shortage of practical applications, though. The oil and gas industry relies on a strictly regulated environment and so demands careful analysis when it comes to the implementation of new systems. That said, there may not be any other choice but digitalisation left anymore. In an age where businesses have been confronted with the necessary and demanding nature of health and safety measures, the need to remain productive throughout crises has become one of the primary concerns for all businesses.

Regardless of the delayed implementation, IIoT interfaces hold vast possibilities for the oil and gas industry.

The primary impact of the implementation of an IIoT interface is its direct influences of a business’s value drivers. Through its ongoing monitoring and early detection benefits, unnecessary loss is prevented, operational expenses are reduced, maintenance costs are significantly lowered, unscheduled downtime is minimised and the overall safety of operations is increased through the elimination of risks. This is only as far as preventative applications apply. When it comes to the growth of your company, IIoT implementation will help businesses maximise their output by sweating their assets and optimising their systems.

Thanks to Cyntech’s use of MindSphere, a cloud-based IIoT system developed by Siemens, clients now have a safe and open-source platform (PaaS) through which data can be converted into valuable information. With the successful utilisation of MindSphere, data that is collected at by sensors and other devices can be processed, interpreted, organised and structured into valuable, cohesive information. By connecting various physical devices digitally, the maximum amount of raw data can be collected, encrypted, analysed and finally translated into information that can be implemented in analytical models that are aimed at predictive maintenance and optimised operations. This information can then be connected directly to the relevant technicians and management, and will feed directly back into a business’s value drivers.

Due to MindSphere’s use of cloud saving, users may have concerns regarding data ownership and privacy; concerns that are all too important in the digital age. This is one of the main factors that has inhibited the widespread implementation of IIoT across many industries. With MindSphere, however, there really is nothing to be concerned about.

MindSphere was developed with the highest levels of data security as its priority, where data ownership is maintained at all times and treated with the utmost confidentiality. One of Siemens’s main priorities is security systems, where data is safeguarded throughout its lifecycle, making MindSphere one of the safest platforms to use.

The Industrial Internet of Things is more than a cost-reducing add-on to the current way of doing business; it is the future of how the oil & gas industry and will revolutionise the way plants and operations are run forever.

Cyntech has been at the forefront of Industry 4.0, leading the way in digitalisation, since our beginning. Now, we are ready to be at the forefront of the rise of Oil & Gas 4.0 as well.
